Published By: Gujarat Institute of Development Research (GIDR) | Published Date: January, 01 , 2001

This paper analyse the situation of the women working in subcontracting arrangements in the industry. In the analysis of value chains we found that women workers in all segments were not the direct beneficiaries of the growth in the industry. The women in the small factor segment and homebased workers earned very low incomes. A form of social and economic stratification observed in the society was reflected in the ethnic composition and economic position of the women workers in the industry. Most of the women were young and new recruits to the factories indicating the growth of new units in recent years.
