Sustainable Sand mining Management Guideline

Published By: Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change | Published Date: September, 01 , 2015

Removing sediment from the active channel bed in river sand mining interrupt the continuity of sediment transport through the river system, disrupting the sediment mass balance in the river downstream and induces channel adjustments (usually incision) extending considerable distances (commonly one kilometer or more) beyond the extraction site. The magnitude of the impact basically depends on the magnitudes of the extraction relative to bed load sediment supply and transport through the reach. Implementation of the principles and processes outlined in this Guideline will limit the negative externalities of sand and gravel mining.
