India 2050: Can We Celebrate the Centenary of the Republic as a Developed Country?

The paper argues that there is great disparity of incomes between developed and developing countries. Relative income gap of the developing countries which was 10.8 per cent in 2000 was 15.1 per cent in 2009 with the gap closing at the rate of 3.8 per cent per year. If this differential rate persists, the income gap will be closed in 51 years, that is by 2060. With economic malaise continuing in the developed countries, it is quite possible that the rate of growth of per capita incomes in the developed countries will be negligible for quite some time and the catching up process may be accelerated.
