Contesting Consensus. Disputing Inequality: Agonistic Subjectivities in Rural Bihar

This paper discusses the manner in which the rural poor in one of India’s most impoverished regions engage with and in politics by analyzing the way in which a landless Yadav couple tries to forestall the perpetuation by their wealthy Rajput neighbour of, and eventually contribute to the rupture of, elite-based consensus in their neighbourhood. It finds the framework of ‘agonism’ vitally useful to make sense of these tensions fruitfully.
