An Analysis of the Informal Labour Market in India
Published By: Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) | Published Date: October, 01 , 2014The Indian labour market is characterised by predominance of informal employment with more than 90 per cent of
India’s informal workforce working as self-employed and casual workers. The worrying trend is the increasing rate of
informal employment even in the organised sector. By highlighting some of the not so easily observable trends, the
article tries to argue that the challenges to informalisation are multi-faceted and that a single tool like labour reforms alone cannot address it completely. The need of the hour is to generate an enabling environment that will develop the urge of “formal” culture in the labour market.
