The Role of Construction as an Employment Provider: A World-Wide Input-Output Analysis

Published By: International Labour Organization | Published Date: December, 21 , 2016

This study shows how important the construction sector has been over the last decade as an employment provider in countries at different levels of development. The analysis also revealed decreasing trends of total employment and output and, to a lesser extent, multiplier effects at overall level and in the construction sector. A distinction between direct, indirect and induced employment effects has shown the importance of including indirect and induced employment effects in the analysis, which would otherwise seriously bias the findings. While direct and indirect effects have been relatively steady, induced effects have accounted for most of the changes in the overall effects.
