Launched in June of 2000, "Progress of the World's Women" is UNIFEM's biennial investigation of progress made towards a world where women live free from violence, poverty and inequality. The first issue, Progress 2000, reports on the state of women's lives in the context of globalization from the mid-1980s through the late 1990s. Topics covered include women's economic security and rights, engendering governance and leadership and promoting women's human rights. National statistical indicators in tables and charts are provided as well as stories of individual women. It explores the ways that globalization can be reshaped to promote the progress of poor women through microfinance, new markets for goods and services, and the use of technology. "Progress of the World's Women 2000" provides a comprehensive evaluation of women's lives over the past decade, as well as a look at future directions.
