Economic Growth, Labour Markets and Gender in Japan

Published By: Gujarat Institute of Development Research (GIDR) | Published Date: July, 01 , 2003

The purpose of this paper is not to look at the Japanese growth model, which has been well researched, but to look at women’s employment in the economic development of Japan. The questions that the paper tries to address are: what happened to women’s labour force participation with the process of economic development; what kind of returns of economic growth did women in the labour force receive with economic growth; and what social and cultural barriers and institutional policies actually hindered this process.
