Rural Tamil Nadu in the Liberalisation Era: What Do We Learn from Village Studies?

In this paper, the aim is to survey the findings of village studies that have been accomplished over the last two decades the era of economic liberalisation in India together with those of larger-scale surveys in which households have been studied in a sample of villages from across a small region. Several of the recent village studies reviewed in this paper report rates of population growth lower than the natural rate of growth of population in rural Tamil Nadu, and they supply abundant evidence of migration, often to towns and cities.
