This study is an attempt to assess the importance and potential impact of any further development of the credit cooperative sector; identify development interventions that will result in a strong Filipino credit cooperative financial system; formulate policy recommendations that will support the further strengthening of the credit cooperative sector and encourage development assistance to credit cooperatives as a viable mechanism for a sustainable credit system in Philippine communities. The study uses sample data from a survey of 104 credit cooperatives from nine regions of the country. Survey data were obtained from the sample credit cooperatives' audited financial statements and accounting records for fiscal years 1990-1992. [DISCUSSION PAPER SERIES NO. 94-04].
