Australia and China in the World

Australia’s engagement with, and serious study of, China is not a recent phenomenon. It has been a strong part of our heritage, as this lecture series amply demonstrates. But this does not mean that it is yet a strong or rich enough part of our national dialogue. As a country we need a focused training of expertise in 360-degree “China literacy”.To develop a New Sinology, scholars, experts and policymakers must be taken out of the silos of separate academic disciplines and departments. The Prime Minister announced the establishment of the Australian Centre on China in the World at the Australian National University to pursue this goal.
