Draft National Pharmaceutical Policy, 2006

In 2002 the government had formulated a new Drug Policy, but the same could not be implemented due to litigation involving it. As a consequence, the policy of 1994 continues to be in force.The present Policy known as the National Pharmaceuticals Policy, 2005 has been necessitated due to several developments that have taken place during the course of last few years as well as to address some of the major concerns with regard to the rapid growth of the sector and the changes in the patent regime worldwide.. Price regulation of the essential medicines is an important component of this policy. However several other matters having a close bearing on the pharmaceuticals sector have also been included in the policy.
