EFA Case Study India 20 June 2003: Gender Equality in Education (India) Progress in the Last Decade.

There has been progressive improvement in overall literacy levels across the country. The problem of access has been addressed to a significant degree with close to 90 per cent children in the 6-11 age group currently enrolled in primary schools – formal, alternative and private taken together. The country has witnessed a decadal jump (1991–2001) of 13.17 per cent for men and 14.87 per cent for women in literacy rates and for the first time, a decrease in the absolute number of illiterates.
