War on the Female Body: Rape and Sexual Violence during Conflict

This article focuses on rape as a weapon of war, the sociological impacts of which can be widespread and long-lasting. This is especially due to the ensuing terror and disruption to livelihoods, relationships and morale. Sexual violence has an enormous burden on individuals and communities worldwide. Women and girls are particularly vulnerable, with one in three women globally estimated to experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. Rape and sexual violence has severe physical and psychological consequences in any circumstance.
