Long-term Care of Older Persons in Japan

In 1970, the ageing rate exceeded 7 per cent, the threshold which used to be considered as the onset of population ageing. It took only 26 years before the ageing rate reached 14 per cent, the threshold of an aged population.
Considering that it took France 115 years or the United States 69 years for their ageing rates
to go from 7 per cent to 14 per cent, Japan’s case is one of the quickest in the world. However, the emerging countries such as the Republic of Korea and Thailand will have an
even shorter period for this transition.
