Power Crisis in Pakistan: A Crisis in Governance?

Published By: Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) | Published Date: January, 01 , 2012

The objective in this study is to examine the issues and constraints faced by the power sector in Pakistan. The paper will try to evaluate the reasons behind the current energy crisis despite present government commitment and initiatives taken to solve energy problems. The hypothesis to be tested is whether the reason behind current energy crisis is that ‘the government has failed to respond adequately to overcome the energy crises or whether the government has moved in the wrong direction.’ The paper will examine the origin of the present crisis; the rising demand supply gap; the problems faced by the power sector; and steps taken by the present government.
