Renowned art critic Sunil Kothari is no more
ImageDance critic, scholar and dance historian Sunil Kothari, 87, passed away last week. He had been hospitalised for COVID related issues earlier but had been discharged.
Kothari, writes Ulaganathan, dance critic in Bangalore (The New Indian Express, December 28, 2020)  was a " bachelor, his life was dedicated to dance. He was born in a Gujarati family, and followed the family diktat, becoming a chartered accountant. But he strayed into the world of dance, influenced by Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay, Rukmini Devi Arundale and Mrinalini Sarabhai, among others. Kothari authored over 20 books, his recent one being Sattriya Dances of Assam."
He had been working on his autobiography in Gujarati and English. He was a prolific writer and researcher and his passion was dance. More importantly, he was a critic who was respected by everyone and was known to help ease tensions among artistes. He travelled extensively and made a point of keeping up with all the new developments in the field of dance

He will be deeply missed.
