Workshop on Preventing the Illicit Trafficking of Cultural Property held in Kuwait

UNESCO organized a workshop “Preventing the Illicit Trafficking of Cultural Property” in Kuwait, on 18 and 19 February 2019. The workshop was organized as part of the National Capacity Building and Awareness Raising Programme, under the project “Preservation and Promotion of Kuwait’s Cultural Heritage”
The workshop Preventing the Illicit Trafficking of Cultural Property was organized by the UNESCO Regional office for the GCC and Yemen, in collaboration with the Supreme Council for Planning and Development (SCPD), the National Council for Culture, Arts and Literature (NCCAL) and UNDP Kuwait.

The workshop brought together international experts from UNESCO, UNIDROIT, INTERPOL, ICOM, and Oxford University and a number of local participants from cultural institutions, customs and government institutions to share knowledge and discuss best approaches and tools in fighting against illicit trafficking of cultural properties.

The aim was also to support the Government of Kuwait in developing networks at local, national and regional levels to ensure general awareness of the dramatic consequences of trafficking of cultural property on the impoverishment of a community’s heritage and a people’s cultural identity.
