A fearless social and political activist, Girish Karnad was also the frontman of parallel cinema in India. The International Theatre Centre of UNESCO, Paris, declared him the World Theatre Ambassador of the International Theater Institute, Paris. The social and political activist, Karnad was also honoured with the Padma Bhushan and was also conferred the prestigious Jnanpith and Sahitya Akademi awards. Some of his finest works, Boiled Beans on Toast, Crossing to Talikota, Tughlaq, Wedding Album, Yayati, Hayavadana,are a testimony to his masterful hard-hitting dramas with a strong social message. He also acted in Kannada and Hindi movies and won kudos.
He was also in the forefront of movements protesting state repression and violence.
He will be missed in the theatre world and the liberal movement in art and theatre.
