IIT Madras paves way for humanities and social sciences studies
Image

While IIT is well-known for its Joint Entrance Exam (JEE), in recent years, another IIT exam has picked up quite a following. IIT HSEE (Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination) is a gateway to study humanities at IIT Madras either through an integrated M.A. in English Studies or Development Studies. The five-year programme is one of the niche programmes in humanities in India.

There has been a steady increase in the number of students who take up this multi-disciplinary course to give themselves a strong base in the social sciences, or to use it as a testing ground to discover their area of specialisation.

Graduates of this programme are typically employed by consultancy firms, research institutions, world organisations, NGOs, and banks, or work in fields such as academia and journalism. Students who will be appearing in Class XII examinations in March 2017 or students who had appeared for the first time in Class XII examination in 2016 are eligible to apply.

HSEE is primarily an online examination, with a small written component. The core of the online examination is a general aptitude test. The written component is a 300-word essay on a topic of general or contemporary interest.

The general aptitude test comprises the following sections:

English: In this section, questions based on vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar, idioms, phrases and literary devices are asked to test candidates’ standard of English, which is vital to this programme.

Analytical and mathematical ability: Any research-oriented programme expects students to have reasonable logical, basic arithmetic and statistical skills.

Questions in this section revolve around puzzles, analogy, series completion, time and work, ratio and proportion, data interpretation and so on.

General knowledge: Apart from testing the general awareness of candidates, this section focuses on students’ knowledge in subjects such as economics, history, contemporary world affairs, ecology and environment.
