Antibiotics on the Farm: Agriculture’s Role in Drug Resistance

The evidence that antibiotic use in agriculture creates a pool of resistant bacteria in farm animals is not in dispute. The key questions relate to the magnitude of the risk to human health, and the productivity effects of antibiotic growth promoters. Importantly, some recent research suggests that the economic gains for farmers from using antibiotics are less than previously thought.
