Apostasy and the Freedom of Belief: A New Islamic Perspective

Published By: Arab Center For Research & Policy Studies | Published Date: October, 16 , 2011

This paper offers a novel perspective on the concept of freedom of conscience in Islam and the rules of apostasy in which the author, YehyaJad revises the notion of the death penalty for the apostate. Jad’s argument affirms that freedom of belief and the freedom to remain in the Muslim community or to abandon it are guaranteed by several Quranic verses. The author interprets the application of the apostasy rule during the days of the Prophet as having been related to the apostates’ joining the infidel camp and battling Muslims.
