A Global Green New Deal for Sustainable Development

Seventy-six years ago, in the midst of the Great Depression, the United States government introduced the New Deal. The New Deal effectively harnessed the fiscal stimulus for environmental as well as developmental goals. Not only did it help pull the United States out of the Great Depression, it successfully addressed unsustainable agricultural practices that had caused widespread ecological, social and economic crisis in the Midwest, and helped usher in a new era of economic growth and expanding prosperity, especially in the relatively poorer regions.
