Competition and Response in Small Firm Clusters: Two Cases from Western India

This paper addresses the different firm level strategies adopted to face up to the pressures of competition by two industrial clusters in the highly industrialised state of Gujarat. The overwhelming presence of ‘informality’ in the production sphere, lack of collective vigilance both from the local state and the industry body and surplus labour have contributed to price competition, unfair business practices and pathetic working conditions.
