This study is based on 50 life history narratives, and explores the circumstances and situations of of queer PAGFB (persons assigned gender female at birth) who are made to conform to societal norms of gender and sexuality. The report charts their experiences with natal families, schooling, intimate relationships and jobs, public spaces, state agencies; and explores where they seek and find support, community and refuge from the violence that marks many of their lives. These narratives provide insight into the construction of gender, and points towards new envisionings that challenge the hierarchical, discrete, binary schemes of gender.
