Wage Inequalities in India

Published By: Centre for Development Studies (CDS) | Published Date: December, 15 , 2018

This paper examines the dimension of inequality since our earlier work on poverty and deprivation suggest that social inequality seems to overwhelm all other inequalities in a whole range of indicators. The period of analysis is between 1993 and 2012. The findings suggest that overall wage inequality increased during the first decade (1993-2005) of economic reforms and declined somewhat during the next decade (2004-2012). More detailed work shows that the decline is mostly in the bottom half of the wage worker population. But the sheen of this silver lining has been completely wiped out by the persistence of very low wages.
