Human Rights and Women in India: A Critical Perspective

Published By: International Multidisciplinary Journal | Published Date: September, 01 , 2014

The rape followed by the death of a New Delhi university student in December 2012 shamed India and her cultural ethos while sparking nationwide debate over the need to make laws more stringent if not lex talionis, the law of retaliation (Hammurabi Code). There is also a feeling that Indian authorities' are lax in their treatment of sexual violence. The Verma Committee report followed Nirbahay's case as of Vishaka and there after the now famous Tehelka. The question that one wishes to raise is, is there an end to this or will the laws be made to look as if they are inevitable in a situation where the attitude of men will not see any change.
