Livelihood of Local Communities and Forest Degradation in India: Issues for REDD+

The enforcement of The Forest Conservation Act, 1980 enabled the regulation of widespread diversions of forestland for non-forest uses, and hence put a check on deforestation. The changing priorities of the forest department from revenue generation to conservation-oriented forestry and the practice of doing away with clear felling of tress has resulted in a significant decline of formal pressure of deforestation and degradation on forest ecosystem.
