Combating Low Birth Weight and Intra - Uterine Growth Retardation

Low birth weight is a major public health problem in India. About 30% of all infants born in hospitals are reported to weigh less than 2.5 kg at birth. Studies carried out by ICMR in the late seventies showed that both in urban and rural areas in India women from low income group do not have ready access to antenatal care or food supplementation through ICDS.
